Welcome!

Hearing Loss Web is dedicated to people who have hearing loss, but are not members of the traditional Deaf community. This includes people who consider themselves to be hearing impaired, hard of hearing, late deafened, and oral deaf. We provide information on issues, medical topics, resources, and technology related to hearing loss.

What's HOT!

Interested in our perceptions of the current trends in the hearing loss world! We read many of the email lists, subscribe to lots of publications, and attend conventions every year. So we think we have a pretty good pulse on what's going on! Here are our thoughts on current trends:

Coverage of the 2010 HLAA Convention

Here's our coverage of the 2010 HLAA (formerly SHHH) convention. We've got LOTS of great reports on the workshops, activities, and the "flavor" of this great event!

Our Discussion Forum is Reborn!

You may recall that we had to close our Discussion Forum because the spammers took it over. We're thrilled to be back up and running with new software that we think will allow us to virtually eliminate spam. To see what folks are discussion or to participate yourself, visit our Discussion Forum NOW!

In the News

Here are quick excerpts of hearing loss stories in the news, along with links to more complete coverage!

Coverage of the 2009 HLAA Convention

Here's our coverage of the 2009 HLAA (formerly SHHH) convention. We've got LOTS of great reports on the workshops, activities, and the "flavor" of this great event!

Sorenson Resumes Disinformation Campaign

Remember last year when Sorenson enraged the HOH community by claiming that Video Relay Service (VRS) serves their needs? Well, they've just kicked it up a notch by claiming that ASL is the native language of HOH folks!

Relay Services and HOH Folks: Why Don't They Want to Serve You?

Video Relay provides functionally equivalent telephone service for the signing community, but the relay services for the HOH community aren't nearly as elegant, despite the relative ease with which they could be provided? Have you ever wondered why that is?

Awakening Oral Hearing Loss Community

Members of the oral hearing loss community (hard of hearing, late-deafened, and oral deaf folks) are demanding services and appropriate accommodations. Increasingly aware that they comprise over 95% of the people with hearing loss, their voices are increasingly being raised and heard! Awakening OHL Community

Chapters

Issues and their resolution continue to be a hot topic among the hearing loss community. Check here to find out what really sets us off and what we're doing about it.

Medical aspects of hearing loss are receiving increased attention from the medical and scientific community. Here's where you can find out about current developments.

Resources take many forms. It can be an organization that informs us about a new device to assist us, a group of hard of hearing, late deafened, or oral deaf people who REALLY understand a situation that has us upset, or someone who can tell us how she successfully resolved our current problem.

Technology greatly improves access for people with hearing loss. There are so many new things that can really make a difference in our lives. Read about them here.

Our Mission

Hard of hearing, late deafened, and oral deaf Americans are unrecognized and underserved. They have not been successful at educating the public concerning their situation or at getting their needs met.

This website will focus on changing that reality. Our goals are:

1) To provide resources to assist the hard of hearing, late deafened, and oral deaf population to fully participate in mainstream American society

2) To educate members of the hearing world about our hard of hearing, late deafened, and oral deaf population

We are very excited to announce the addition of our Discussion Forum. Do you have a gripe you want to get off your chest? Or maybe you want to let others know about a great resource you found. Or just see what others in the hearing loss community have to say. Check it out on our Discussion Forum.
