Mobile DTV

Is this the next big thing? Mobile DTV transmits digital television to mobile receivers which can be virtually anywhere, including in moving vehicles. As with most new technologies, disability access is far behind the technological development, so there is currently no requirement for mobile DTV to include captioning. Is this the next big thing from which people with hearing loss will be excluded?

Mobile DTV Standard includes captioning support!

April 2010

One ongoing source of frustration for people with hearing loss is the tendency of the developers of new technology to fail to consider the needs of people with disabilities, including hearing loss. An important current example is the situation with HDMI cables, which do NOT support the transmission of captioning information! The good news is that it looks like we may actually be ahead of the curve with an emerging technology - Mobile DTV. Their recently released standard includes explicit support for closed captioning! If you're so inclined, brew a fresh pot and peruse the standard.
