Most people with hearing loss accept the term 'hearing impaired'
This story is about the term "Hearing Impaired". This is a
term that the Culturally Deaf
find objectionable. Hard of hearing, late deafened, and oral deaf
persons, on the other hand, feel it is a perfectly acceptable term to
describe their hearing loss; for many people in that group,
"hearing impaired" is the PREFERRED term. See Who's Who
for information about causes of these diverse perspectives.
Here is the Original Letter from a
Culturally Deaf person, and a Response from a
member of the hard of hearing/late deafened community.
