Brian Riley Essay

Brian Riley of gallyprotest.org has written an essay claiming that Jane Fernandes, the nominee to be the next president of Gallaudet University, wants all state deaf schools closed down. His essay is presented in six parts, followed by a response from Jane Fernandes.

Part One Part Two Part Three Part Four Part Five Part Six

Here's Jane Fernandes' response:

Dear Editor:

Contrary to what one of your contributing writers stated in today's edition, I am now, have always been, and will continue to b e a strong proponent of the efficacy of the nation's public and private schools for deaf and hard of hearing children. As director of the Hawaii Center for the Deaf and Blind, I witnessed first-hand the invaluable role these schools have in the education of deaf students. Today, the mutually beneficial relationship between Gallaudet and the nation's schools for deaf students is stronger than ever. I guarantee your readers that I am committed to making sure it stays that way.

Jane K. Fernandes
President Designate
Gallaudet University
