TDI Devotes Magazine Issue to CapTel
The most recent issue of TDI's quarterly magazine
"GA-SK" is devoted in its entirety to the CapTel phone. The
magazine contains articles on how it works, who benefits from it, the
advocacy efforts that have been required to get the service in various
states, the current status of captioned telephone service, and much
more. It is truly a comprehensive and informative magazine.
But
that's not what placed TDI in the Hall of Fame. TDI deserves Hall of Fame status, because it is a traditionally Deaf
organization that has expanded its efforts to include advocacy for the oral
hearing loss (OHL) community. Unlike the organizations that
"talk the talk", TDI is taking the difficult steps necessary
to "walk the walk".
I
want to commend you and TDI on the most recent issue of
"GA-SK." You provided an interesting and comprehensive
discussion of the CapTel phone, which is such an important resource to
people with hearing loss who prefer spoken language as their primary
means of communication. Informing your members about a technology
which is intended for the oral community is a real service to a
much-underserved population.
Too
often we see traditionally Deaf organizations that add "and hard
of hearing" to their name or mission statement, without providing
appropriate services or even considering what it means to truly serve
the oral hearing loss population. This issue of "GA-SK" is
another indication that TDI is "walking the walk" of an
organization that truly serves the Deaf AND hard of hearing.
My
appreciation and best wishes,
None to Date.
