TeleASL Now Available on WorldView TTY/PC Systems

Editor: Those of you who sign might be interested in the technology that allows people to communicate in sign over a standard telephone line using home computers. HITEC has just announced their Worldview TCS system, which does exactly that. I'm a little skeptical of the claim that this system can be used over a 56k dialup modem (a claim made by other manufacturers, as well), but other than that, this sounds like a great way to communicate.

HITEC Group is very pleased to announce the availability of the WorldView TCS - Total Communications System for people who are deaf or severely hard of hearing. HITEC is also pleased to announce WPP, the WorldView Payment Plan that allows consumers, organizations or businesses to purchase these PC based systems for as low as $23.00 per month for a WorldView 400DT TTY/PC model and as low as $43.00 per month for a WorldView 400 TCS model.

Building on its popular WorldView TTY/PC system, HITEC has added the capability of video communications to the WorldView System enabling people to communicate in American Sign Language (ASL) over the telephone system.

People who use ASL as their primary language can now connect via 56K dial-up modems or via the Internet and communicate in their native language. "We have been told by deaf members of our staff and their friends and relatives and our clients that this is a major breakthrough", stated Michelle DeBoer, Director of Outreach Services. "For years people have been trapped in outmoded TTY communications that rely on 100 year old baudot TTY technology. Some advances have been made through the use of two-way pagers but that is still a limited technology relying on slow text communication. With the WorldView TCS, we help people break out of that old TTY technology and move into the modern world of Total Communications capabilities. We believe the most exciting communication option is our "TeleASL ", the capability to use sign language over the telephone lines.

Using advanced PC based technologies, we are able to use universal design concepts and provide the capability to communicate with the old baudot TTYs, single & two-line VCO, Faxes, Email, pagers, Internet Chat, Instant Messaging, Voice, Voice over IP and virtually any evolving communications system."
